I never liked rats. Nope, I never was a rat lover.

I saw the movies, learned in school about the Great Plague and called mean and nasty people "rats" and I did not mean it in a good way.

I was even squeamish about the texture of their tails.

When my youngest son, who has autism and the behavior problems that come with it, decided against a guinea pig as an incentive and instead chose a rat, I was...concerned. A rat?!? Who'd ever want rats as a pet?

The first day we took him into our home, he bit my wife's finger. Because it happened in front of my son, she kept her cool and ran off to clean and bandage the beast's bite. She never quite liked him for a while after that and only now will she pet him very, very carefully.

I was sure I was next. Then there was that tail...

I kept giving treats to him for the next few days, being mindful of my own fingers. I began to notice that he was pretty cute - he was just a few months old and probably a bit scared himself.

But I still didn't like rats.

It was then I made the mistake of taking him from his cage.

He was so soft, cuddly...and happy! Finally, playtime! That was it. I was hooked, addicted, over the edge. I became a rat lover.

I read all about them, scanned (and talked on) forums about them and learned his most favorite treats. Back off from his asparagus and soybeans, but you're more than welcome to the bananas and cucumbers.

In my reading and research, I discovered that females tended to be more frisky and mischievous with the possibility of some serious health problems. I also knew that two boys or two girls together were fine, but a boy AND a girl? No way, never!!

As you probably already know, we now have a little female too. They'll be undergoing "the procedure" very shortly so they can become playmates.

A few dozen more and I'll be all set!!

Why Unique Rat Gifts

It started with looking for unusual and unique rat gifts for my son. Much of what I found was pretty un-unique and non-unusual. I knew from my own conversion that rat lovers themselves were unique and sometimes very unusual, like my son. He loves having a "rattie site" and exploring for the truly cool rat lover gifts whereever they may be. I'll keep on looking and you'll be the first to know when I find something new!
